Opole - A Nice Small Town

One reason we chose this hotel is that breakfast is included, saving us the trouble of finding a Milk Bar or some other place. One gets to choose from six set menus with things like Polish sausage on one, scrambled eggs and chicken pie on another, and one with milk-soup (with cornflakes). We opt for the one with eggs. The scrambled eggs are good with loads of good ham and cheese mixed in. The chicken pie is actually chicken liverwurst. The normal basket of bread, platter of various meats and cheeses, and a tomato/green onion salad is supplemented by little containers of blackcurrant jam, apricot jam, and honey. It'll be a light lunch today.

The tourist office in the Rynek (Market Square) is very helpful, loading us up with maps, brochures, and free T-shirts! There's a large tourism fair in the rynek with dozens of stalls giving out literature and food samples. I get a little plastic raincoat in a 6cm plastic sphere. It'll be perfect for keeping under my bicycle saddle. Around the corner, they're selling Czech beer. A half-litre of 11% beer is 3 zł! They're surprised that I only want one. I drank it later that afternoon and will get more tomorrow if they are still there.

If you could add smells to this, you'd all want some

Look closely for the Oreo cookie earrings - they are now owned by Clarisse - 12 zł

I'm craving żurek and perogies for dinner and Clarisse find the perfect place: Pierogarnia SC just off the touristy Rynek. They're out of żurek, but the goulash soup (9 zł) is delicious if a bit salty. A plate of 10 Ruskie (Russian) perogies is only 8 zł ; a plate of 12 mixed is 15 z. Two small beers are 4 zł each, We waddle out for exactly 40 zł .

We try to walk it off by climbing up the stairs to the church and through the upscale shopping centre but it doesn't help much. Next to the church, there are a series of bronze sculptures. Here's a sampling:

Then it's time for the Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Ronaldo has scored for the former; Diego Costa has scored for the latter.
