Banished to the salt mines of Wieliczka

The 200 km. trip to Wieliczka was a lot simpler than the last all-day affair. It was one train from Opole to Kraków Plaszow, a platform change, and a quick ride to Wieliczka. Total cost for two people: 66,13 zł. How can it be an odd number? The first sector was about 5 hours so we killed time by watching Cars on the little Asus. Pixar's animation remains as good as ever but Disney's influence is noticeable in the sappiness of the story. 7/10.

My little sketchy map from the station to the hotel doesn't work this time and we miss the turn. It's because you have to enter the grounds of the very swish looking Hotel Sal to get to the Pokoje-Młyn, literally Salt Mine Rooms for Rent. Checking in was pleasant and speedy. And the room is excellent with a real double bed with an excellent mattress, a single bed, wardrobe, clean spacious bathroom, desk, and a fridge. It's a slightly more than our budget at $72 per night including tax and a buffet breakfast.

Our hotel is the second floor (third floor if you're not European) of the building on the right
The building on the left is one of the shafts into the salt mine

The receptionist suggests the nearby Halit restaurant but we are not impressed. The waitress looks exhausted and surprisingly, they're out of draft beer! My żurek (12 zł) is ok but not worth the price, the fried fish (20 zł) is very good but it comes with frozen fries. Clarisse had honey ribs (20 zł) which were kind of bland. We split a nice Okocim porter (6 zł) and a small salad (10 zł) for a total of 75 zł with the normal 10% tip.

It's so quiet that we can sleep with the window open until the birds and sunshine get up at 5 a.m.
